Stewards of Historic Preservation for Modern Recreation

Delaware’s Division of Parks and Recreation manages 17 state parks and nature preserves across 26,000 acres, with a mission to protect natural resources, preserve historical sites, and provide public recreational and educational opportunities. The Division actively acquires additional land to adapt for public use, while ensuring the preservation of the unique natural and cultural heritage these properties represent.

A prime example of this effort is the 1993 acquisition of Cauffiel Estate as an addition to Bellevue State Park. Named after Daniel Cauffiel, the du Pont company’s chief legal officer, this 1928 Colonial Revival home has been lovingly restored with mid-20th century furnishings and décor. Along with the property's bank-style barn just across the lawn, Cauffiel Estate offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and historical elegance, making it an ideal setting for any social gathering.
