It might have been tempting at that point to parcel the land for development, but Dixon Stroud had a different vision. A longtime steeplechase aficionado and former competitor, he chose instead to preserve the land by building a world-class course to rival the best on the East Coast. Since its inaugural race on May 22, 1993, the Willowdale Steeplechase has become known for blending European and American traditions, offering exceptional amphitheater views, and prioritizing equine safety in its course design. Over the decades, it has grown in stature and attendance, raising nearly $1.5 million for local charities. Willowdale’s open greenspace also hosts a hot air balloon festival, an annual agricultural fair, and local high school cross-country practice, with the track’s center still farmed for hay.

Now, Willowdale enters its next chapter, the rebuilt dairy barn and refurbished Yellow House becoming a place for weddings, celebrations, corporate and nonprofit events, and community gatherings of all kinds—continuing the Bucklins’ commitment to preserving history, nature, and community for generations to come.
