Where Sky Meets Water

Welkinweir Estate, nestled into a picturesque hillside in the heart of beautiful Chester County, takes its name from an Old English phrase meaning “where sky meets water.” At the center is the historic estate house surrounded by stone patios, formal gardens, and an adjacent banquet tent—all with amazing views over the emerald valley landscape below, featuring five ponds, a meandering brook, and many acres of protected forests. The remnants of a 200-year-old stone barn and a stone springhouse round out the mood of countryside tranquility.

The Green Valleys Watershed Association headquartered at Welkinweir leads a diverse mix of nonprofits, educational institutions, state agencies, and community members in efforts to keep local watersheds healthy and thriving. The woodlands, meadows, wetlands, ponds, streams, and gardens all make Welkinweir a wonderful living laboratory for observing nature and learning about sustainable water and land stewardship.

GVWA’s many educational programs help get young people (our nation’s future leaders!) into the outdoors to appreciate the natural world, including summer nature day camps, Scout merit badge activities, after-school environmental clubs, “creek snorkels” (yes, kids face-down in creeks learning what’s what down there!) and even an “Owl Prowl” featuring real owls and other raptors!

Welkinweir is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, honoring a legacy that spans centuries. 📚 Originally farmland, the estate was thoughtfully shaped in the early twentieth century by Everett and Grace Rodebaugh into a landscape of gardens, ponds, woodlands, and a Colonial Revival residence rooted in earlier historic structures. Their vision centered on creativity, conservation, and a deep respect for the land. Today, Welkinweir continues as a public arboretum and nature sanctuary where history, artistry, and stewardship remain beautifully intertwined.
