A Storybook Setting

The noted “gentleman anthropologist” ceramicist, and antiquarian Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) built Fonthill Castle in 1912, both as a home and a showplace for his famed collection of Moravian tiles and other art works. The building is distinctive for being one of the first ever constructed using reinforced poured-in-place concrete, and its eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles gives it a unique “fairytale castle” vibe.

Keeping History Alive

The Bucks County Historical Society (BCHS) is a private nonprofit organization that operates the Mercer Museum & Library and Fonthill Castle. As the county historical society, BCHS is charged with collecting, preserving, and interpreting the rich history and culture of Bucks County and the Delaware Valley region. As the primary inheritor of the material and intellectual legacy of Henry C. Mercer, the BCHS is custodian of a regionally and nationally significant collection of tools and artifacts that illuminate the history of pre-industrial America to c. 1850.

Fonthill Castle, completed in 1912, was built by Henry Chapman Mercer to be both a home and a showplace for his collection of tiles, prints, and other art works. The structure is an early example of poured-in-place reinforced concrete construction, with forty-four rooms, over two hundred windows, eighteen fireplaces, and an interior decorated with handcrafted ceramic tiles that Mercer himself designed at the height of the Arts and Crafts period.
