The Big Red Barn

Bishop Farmstead is a lovingly restored 1930s barn set amidst twelve acres of native fields and woodlands at the edge of New Jersey’s famous Pine Barrens. The surrounding fields, which once grew conventional soybeans, are now worked as an organic farm producing a variety of vegetables for the catering table. The “Big Red Barn” and its surrounding lawns and gardens have been adapted as a rustic event space perfect for weddings and other occasions.

The rustic charm of Bishop Farmstead blends perfectly with the surrounding forests and fields to offer a charming countryside setting for weddings large and small.

Speaking Up for a New Jersey National Treasure

The nonprofit Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) is a leading voice in protecting the natural and historic resources of New Jersey’s famous “Pinelands”—800,000 acres of pristine forest situated in one of the country's most densely developed regions. The Pinelands also hold one of North America’s largest and healthiest aquifers, a thriving community of rare wildlife and plants, and a fascinating cultural history of ghost towns, historic villages, farms, and people.

On the public outreach front, PPA's popular “Pinelands Adventures” hiking, paddling, and history tours let people experience and appreciate the virtues of the Pinelands firsthand for themselves.

Behind the scenes, PPA advocates for consistent enforcement of New Jersey’s "Pinelands Protection Act and Comprehensive Management Plan,” which includes some of the strongest, most innovative growth management laws in the country. These initiatives include setting strict boundaries on development, developing sustainable aquifer usage, protecting rare species habitats, and promoting sustainable development policies for specific Pinelands spaces.

PPA also advances the permanent acquisition of land and development rights by conservation agencies with the resources to guard the Pineland’s unique natural and cultural heritage against sprawl, poorly designed development, and other abuses of land and water.

With nearly 68,000 acres within the Pinelands used for farming, sustainable agriculture is also on the PPA’s agenda. The PPA is in fact headquartered at Bishop Farmstead, a 12-acre parcel now redeveloped as a fully functioning organic farm, to demonstrate how thoughtful land management can both improve the environment and support a sustainable farm business. Catered events at the farm use fresh produce harvested on site, with trimmings and leftovers composted and returned to the soil. These events not only bring people into the Pinelands, they also generate revenue to support the PPA’s various sustainability-oriented programs and activities.
